27/1: Letters to managers 4 January 1961 – 28 December 1962. Comprising:

  • letters to Gordon H. Lang, managing director, Barlow & Co. (Malaya) Ltd, including general estate management;
  • negotiations over acquisitions of rubber properties including Glasgow Rubber Estates Ltd and the Ichamaram estate;
  • financial arrangements with Boustead & Co. (1960) Ltd, relating to takeover of Singapore agency;
  • matters arising from visiting agents’ reports by Joseph W. Allgrove, A. J. Hunter and Ian A. MacDonald;
  • letters to A. J. Hunter relating to the acquisition of Scottish Malayan Estates Ltd and his work as a visiting agent;
  • Damansara Valley water scheme;
  • lengthy negotiations over sale of Inchong estate (APR – DEC 1962), abandoned;
  • letters to C. F. Guise, acting head of Kuala Lumpur office in Lang’s absence (APR – SEP 1961);

27/2: Letters to managers 2 January 1963 – 29 December 1964. Comprising:

  • letters to Gordon H. Lang, managing director, Barlow & Co. (Malaya) Ltd, including continuing negotiations over sale of Inchong estate to completion;
  • general estate management, matters arising from Joseph W. Allgrove’s estate reports;
  • ‘Malaysianisation’ – moves towards local registration of rubber companies in Kuala Lumpur (15 MAY 1963);
  • letters to C. E. Hindson, acting head of Kuala Lumpur office (JUN – SEP 1963) during Lang’s absence on leave, including purchase of Byram and Kampulong estates by Highlands & Lowlands, fall-out from Guthrie Estates Agency boardroom resignations, management of Inchong estate up to final hand-over, Allgrove’s reports on labour troubles on Sungei Rengam and Sungei Way estates (23 JUL 1963);
  • upon Lang’s return from leave (1 OCT 1963) further correspondence relating to ‘Malaysianisation’ of rubber estates – question of European versus Malay management (1 OCT 1963);
  • letters concerning new Emergency situation in Malaysia (1964);
  • possible sale of Torkington estate to United Plantations Ltd, followed by transfer to Highlands Malaya Plantations Ltd (OCT – DEC 1964);
  • transfer of Jin Seng estate from Krian Rubber Plantations Co. Ltd to Highlands Malaya Plantations Ltd (DEC 1964).
