58/1: Official records, correspondence and papers of companies within the Barlow Group during Thomas B. Barlow’s Chairmanship: Highlands & Lowlands Para Rubber Co. Ltd., 1927-1954 Comprising:

  • personal and business correspondence between Thomas B. Barlow and his uncle, Sir Richard D. Denman Bt., MP, founding director of Highlands & Lowlands Para Rubber Co. Ltd, chairman of Badek Rubber Estate Ltd, Harimau Rubber Estates Ltd, with related papers concerning the following: valuation reports on the Badek (1929), Harimau (1927) and Torkington (1930) estates;
  • correspondence and papers relating to the Stevenson Rubber Restriction Scheme (1929-31);
  • letters from Thomas B. Barlow from London during The Blitz (SEP 1940) and letters relating to his marriage to Elizabeth Sackville-West and birth of Henry Sackville Barlow (1943-45), letters from Elizabeth Barlow to Sir Richard D. Denman on family matters (1945-47);
  • post war reconstruction of the Malayan rubber industry and Thomas B. Barlow’s involvement with the Rubber Grower’s Association, formation of Malayan Rubber Estate Owners (Guarantee) Company Ltd to assist re-starting of rubber estates;
  • grouping of member estates into 100,000 acre blocks;
  • letters from Thomas B. Barlow relating to return of plantation staff from armed forces or captivity;
  • extensive correspondence and papers concerning the amalgamation of Highlands & Lowlands and Ayer Kuning (F. M. S.) Rubber Co. Ltd and purchase of the neighbouring Subang estate from Krian Rubber Plantations Co. Ltd (23 AUG 1945 – 19 SEP 1946);
  • correspondence with Christopher R. Harrison, director of Highlands & Lowlands, relating to the amalgamation with Ayer Kuning and purchase of Subang (1946);
  • correspondence between Sir Richard D. Denman and Leo Amery concerning offer of a seat on the Board of Highlands & Lowlands (declined) (JUL-AUG 1947);
  • letters relating to Denman’s retirement from the Board of Highlands & Lowlands (1947);
  • further letters from Thomas B. Barlow on the Malayan Emergency (1948) and concerning Highlands & Lowlands accounts and annual reports and related rubber industry matters (1948-54).
