James Sutcliffe and other family letters, mostly Calcutta, 1843-1863.

The collection comprises mostly the letters of James Sutcliffe, written to family members from his time in India and after his return to the UK. Occasional letters from other members of the family are included. Much of the collection has been transcribed and indexed. A full list of the letters is included in the box.

The letters are descriptive of life in Calcutta and of the workings of Hindu College. Much of the content is descriptive of family finances. Many comments on political situation and on the progress of various campaigns of conquest.
