Description

Donated by Mr R. Cochrane

Extensive diary kept by Mr Richard Cochrane. The diary begins towards the end of Mr Cohcrane’s time at University and chronicles the end of his university days, the process of applying for and getting a position with MacNeill and Barry Ltd, Calcutta and him travelling out to take up that post in August 1953.

Mostly the diary entries are of social, sporting and domestic nature, but there is description of work life as well. The diary ends abruptly in December 1955. Letters, news cuttings and other ephemera are included in its pages. (Each entry is individually numbered in a pre-existing, but unexplained system. Further papers and materials from Mr Cochrane are held at Corpus Christi (diaries 1951-1953), the British in India Museum, Lancashire (books) and at depositories holding materials which were originally donated to the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum in Bristol (films).)

3 vols. London, Calcutta [Kolkata] 1953-1955.
